Grand River CrossFit Member Spotlight- Val B.

Meet Val. She’s 56, self-employed, and the powerhouse behind Maple Greenhouses. But that’s just the beginning of her story.

Getting to Know Val

Val’s been part of the Grand River CrossFit community for over 15 years. She first joined back when we ran morning kickboxing classes – which fit perfectly with her hectic schedule as a business owner and mom of four. A former competitive figure skater, she had always loved fitness. After having kids, she was ready to move again and find something that felt like her.

Back Then…

“When I joined, my son was doing Taekwondo with Greg, and I saw the gym running kickboxing classes. It worked for my mornings, and I jumped in. I was looking to get active again – something for me.

Even though Val had a strong athletic background, the routine had faded. She needed structure and accountability.

“I didn’t want to figure out my own workouts. I just wanted to show up, get it done, and feel stronger.”

Then Everything Clicked

Val found herself loving the gym’s atmosphere. That’s what kept her coming back. Eventually, kickboxing evolved into CrossFit – and she was hooked.

“I liked the one-on-one feel in the beginning. And I love how the gym works now even more. I get more done in 50 minutes than I used to in 90! (There was a bit too much chit-chat before).”

But her biggest breakthrough? Nutrition coaching with Nyree.

“I just wasn’t losing the weight I wanted with workouts alone. Nyree’s coaching was the game changer. It wasn’t a diet – it was a lesson on how to eat properly. After a year of consistency, I lost 15 pounds and dropped from a size 12 to a size 6. I’ve kept that off for a decade now.”

The Ongoing Impact

Val says that training consistently – and eating right – helped her stay strong for the real world. Running a greenhouse isn’t exactly light work. But her strength and fitness let her power through the physical demands of her business.

“I’m 56 and still doing the hard work. That’s because of the gym.”

Her Advice to You

“The hardest part is starting – just do it. Be consistent. You’re going to be sore most of the time, but keep showing up. You won’t regret it.”
